The Devastation of Abuse.

“Her mind is hurt by rape and other physical assault on her body, it fades and shrinks and seeks silence as refuge; it becomes the prison cell inside her… Every invasion of the body is marked in the brain: contusions, abrasions, cuts, swellings, bleeding, mutilation, breaking, burning. Each capacity of the brain – memory, imagination, intellect, creation, consciousness itself – is distressed and deformed, distorted by the sexualised physical injuries that girls and women sustain.” – A.Dworkin, Suffering and Speech, In Harm’s way: The Pornography Civil Rights Hearings 31.
How devastating physical abuse is – limited not merely to the pain of an aching body, but invading every other part of being also. They estimate that between 700,000 and 4 million women and children are trafficked into sexual slavery each year, forced into an existence wherein they are raped daily. I find it difficult to comprehend the number of victims who are suffering the kind of ruin outlined above, even as I type these words, with no hope of escape. Something must be done.
